Songkeeper began with a humpback whale photographed by Mike Mezeul II during his first visit to Mo’orea, French Polynesia, in 2024.
As Mike swam parallel to the whales, a calf turned towards him, rolled to reveal its belly, then swam away. The brief movement felt like a greeting, a moment of connection beneath the surface.

The photograph reveals the whale’s full length and the remarkable proportions of its body. Those qualities guided the geometric interpretation, balancing the overall silhouette with the finer details that give the animal its character.
